The bleeding caused by ulcerative colitis may lead to iron deficiency anemia due to the loss of the body's store of iron in the red blood cells that are lost into the colon. Iron supplementation may be necessary. Medications used to treat ulcerative colitis may reduce the absorption of nutrients such as folic acid and calcium.
