India: Thousands flee deadly violence in India´s Assam

GUWAHATI: More than 2,000 people have fled their homes in the restive Indian state of Assam after separatist rebels killed dozens of villagers, some of them children, an official said Thursday.
Residents sought shelter in makeshift camps set up by the state government following a series of coordinated attacks by armed rebels Tuesday that left at least 69 people dead, 18 of them children.
Another three people were killed on Wednesday when police shot at villagers who went to a police station to demand justice over the attacks.
"More than 2,000 villagers have sought shelter in relief camps. People are of course scared and worried about violence flaring up again," a state welfare official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The tea-growing state of Assam in northeast India has seen violent land disputes in the past between the indigenous Bodo people, Muslim settlers, and rival tribes in the area.
Police blamed Tuesday´s attacks on the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which has waged a violent decades-long campaign for an independent homeland for the Bodo.
On Wednesday, India´s home ministry ordered the deployment of troops to Assam, as villagers launched retaliatory attacks against Bodo settlements.
Television footage showed houses in flames as angry villagers demanded immediate action against the rebels.
A villager at one of the camps said he had left everything behind and was scared to go back.

Jackie Chan says feels ashamed of son’s drug abuse

BEIJING: Hong Kong kung fu movie star Jackie Chan feels ashamed of his son’s drug abuse and hopes that one day he will speak out about the dangers of taking drugs, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Jaycee Chan was formally charged with a drugs offence this week, meaning he is almost certain to face trial.
The younger Chan, a 32-year-old actor and singer, was arrested in Beijing this year after testing positive for marijuana, with police saying they found 100 grams of the drug at his home.
"I hope that in the future, he could become an anti-drug spokesman and tell his experiences to young people," Jackie Chan told Xinhua, in comments released late on Wednesday.
Chan also said that he never used any of his connections to help his son out, the report added.
In August, his father offered the public a "deep bow of apology" for his son´s arrest.
Action and comedy star Jackie Chan, 60, served as a goodwill spokesman for the China National Anti-Drug Committee in 2009, state media reported, promoting anti-drug education.
China has detained a string of other mostly B-list celebrities in recent months on drug-related charges, cases that have been publicised widely in both state and social media. They have included movie and television stars, film directors and a prominent screenwriter.
Drug crimes carry harsh penalties in China including death or life imprisonment in serious cases.
Illegal drugs, especially synthetic substances like methamphetamine, ketamine and ecstasy, have grown in popularity in China in tandem with the rise of a new urban class with greater disposable income.

11 Winter Beauty Tips

1. Try a creamy facial cleanser

Cleansers strip away moisture as part of the job of removing makeup, and dry winter air tends to magnify the problem. Gel cleansers can be very drying, but creamy ones like Dove deep moisture creamy facial cleanser and Neutrogena deep clean cream cleanser should help.

2. Mask the problem

Use a moisturizing facial mask to replenish moisture lost throughout the day.

3. Look for a humidifier

If your skin feels dry and tight even when you’re inside your home, there may not be enough moisture in the air for you. Scan the sale pages for a portable humidifier. Make a note to yourself to clean the filter regularly (if they get yucky they breed bacteria).

4. Turn down the heater

It’s a beauty catch 22, but overheating a cold home will worsen dry skin problems, so experiment with different settings on your heater to find the right temperature for both you and your skin.

5. Any device that heats your environment will also steal your moisture

Even electric blankets. If dry skin is driving you crazy, throw another comforter on the bed, and see how you feel after you’ve left the electric blanket unplugged for a couple nights.

6. Moisturize in the shower

Moisturize throughout the day, but try using body lotion even before you’ve left the shower, right after rinsing soap or body wash. It will help lock in some extra moisture. Rinse off and pat dry.

7. Watch the shower temp

Hot showers feel great in winter, but they wreak havoc on dry skin. Try a lukewarm shower instead, then pat your skin dry with a towel. Apply moisturizer (again) as soon as you step out of the shower.

8. Use alcohol responsibly

Avoid skin products and hairstyling products high in alcohol. When alcohol evaporates it feels cool and refreshing, but it’s also stripping away moisture, so look for alcohol-free products when the air is already dry.

9. Don’t blow it

If you’re already dealing with dry, brittle hair, resist the urge to reach for the hair dryer. It’ll only make things worse. Dry and style your hair with a towel, and if you still use a dryer, time yourself and try to use it a little less.

10. Moisturize meh!

Moisturize throughout the day and don’t forget to drink extra water when it’s cold and windy. Your hands, feet, knees and elbows may need a little more help, too. I like rich products containing shea butter, petrolatum, mineral oil, tea tree oil, linoleic acid or glycerin. For intense relief, moisturize hands and feet at night, and then slip on gloves or socks to lock in moisture.

11. Pucker up

Chapped lips can be a big problem in winter. The air dries out my lips, which makes me lick them, which makes them chap even worse! Use a lip balm with at least SPF 15 and preferably one with antiseptic agents to aid in healing. Some lip balm products are made with tea tree oil, which helps heal painful cracks. I also like lip balms with phenol, beeswax, aloe, vitamin E and essential oils.

7 Quick Fixes to Look More Attractive

1.Large Eyes

One look at the billion dollar anti-aging industry and it's no surprise we find youth beautiful above all else. But skin isn't the only indicator of it — the size of your eyes is, too. "Women with baby-like features such as large, widely-spaced eyes are typically judged to be most attractive," says Viren Swami, PhD, author of The Psychology of Physical Attraction, who cites cross-cultural study data from African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and Taiwanese participants.

The quickest and easiest way to maximize your eyes is to sketch a line on the top lash line using a smoky shade, and then smudge the shadow with a brush or your fingertip to soften and blend, says Tina Turnbow, a celebrity makeup aritst.

2.Clear Skin

Our disdain for blemishes isn't just superficial — it's a way we subconsciously assess how skin clarity reflects underlying health. "They (pimples) are signs of infection — even acne is caused by bacteria — and can signal more dire diseases like measles or skin parasites," says Nancy Etcoff, PhD, a Harvard Medical School psychologist and the author of Survival of the Prettiest.

If you're acne-prone, try a product containing two percent salicylic acid. If your skin doesn't clear up, consider a trip to the derm to get a more comprehensive regimen that may include prescription retinoid use, says Doris Day, MD, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center.

3.Clean Hair

Shampoo commercials have long shown the lure of glossy, smooth strands that bounce weightlessly, though it's something else that we tend to find sexy. "Freud believed that we fetishize hair not only because of the way it looks and feels, but because of the way it smells," says Etcoff. "Hair stirs sight, touch, and scent sensations and memories — it's arousing and primal in its appeal."

While sudsing up daily will keep hair smelling clean, such frequent washings can strip strands of moisture. To stay fresh on days you don't shampoo, take a cue from Franco Wright, founder of LA's Scent Bar. "A great trick is to spritz a brush with your favorite fragrance and then comb through your hair to distribute the scent," he says.

4.Long Lashes

While lashes are supposed to keep debris out of your eyes, batting them is also one of the most popular ways to flirt. Since the tip swoops in an arch and human sight is drawn to motion, fluttering the fringe can capture eye contact. "Women around the world, in modern and ancient cultures, have taken advantage of eyelashes by making them longer and more visible," says David Givens, PhD, an anthropologist and the author of Love Signals.

The best way to enhance your lashes is by using a curler. "A curler opens your eyes to look larger and more awake, makes lashes look longer, and helps you look better even if you're not wearing any makeup at all," says Andrew Sotomayor, a celebrity makeup artist.

5.A Feminine Flush

There's a reason why Marilyn Monroe always wore red on her lips. Estrogen levels rise when women are in the most fertile span of the monthly cycle known as ovulation, increasing blood flow under the skin's surface. This surge flushes cheeks and lips a pink or red tone that behavioral studies show evokes attraction response in men.

Turnbow suggests using a soft stain, like Burt's Bee's Lip Shimmer in Cherry, since it'll give you a natural-looking flush. "Apply the color to lips, and then gently blur the lipline with your finger tip so it looks feminine and natural," she explains. Go back and tap extra color on the center of your lips for an extra juicy pout.

6.Thick Hair

Hair naturally thins as we grow older, though strands are directly influenced by health, diet, and hormones at any age. Each strand has its own blood flow, so thick and flowing locks instantly communicate a sense of wellness. And since hair grows fastest and thickest for women between the ages of 16 and 24, it's yet another indicator of youth, says Etcoff.

"To add thickness to hair, work at the root on the crown," says celebrity stylist Oribe. Polymer-containing aerosols like Oribe's Dry Texturizing Spray absorb oils that kill volume, and add body-building structure to each strand. Spray volumizer in sections at the root, and massage it in with your fingers.

7.Balanced Brows

Symmetry has been considered a mark of facial beauty since the ancient Greeks, and experts say it's because these features form during our crucial developmental years. "Departures from perfect symmetry are assumed to be the result of factors such as stress, nutrition, disease, and infections," explains Swami.

One feature that enhances the perception of facial symmetry is the eyebrow. "Brush brows up and use a powder one shade lighter than your brow color for the most natural look," advises brow guru Anastasia Soare. If you're a blonde, go one shade darker than your hair.
