10 Easy Tips: How To Dress Like Jess From New Girl

The show opened with a chirpy Zooey Deschanel singing and prancing around in a bright red
dress. Right there that moment I knew I was getting myself into something spectacular. 2 years down the line, I’m still hooked to New Girl.

                                      Plot in a nutshell

Jessica “Jess” Day (Zooey Deschanel) is an adorable and offbeat middle school teacher in her late 20s. Jess begins looking for a new place to live after breaking up with her boyfriend. She answers an ad for a new roommate on Craigslist, and moves into an apartment loft with three single men- Nick (a law-school dropout), Schmidt (a businessman-cum-Casanova) and Winston (a clueless former athlete). Can Jess survive this awkward consequence?\

                         Fashion

When I wrote my post on Popular Fashionable TV Shows, I listed New Girl as one of them. Turns out, I’m not the only one who loves her closet. 1 among 100 ladies across the globe adore her style. So without further ado, here’s a quick guide to Jess’ wardrobe.

*Bright Happy colours: The only thing that makes Jess’ closet unique is her choice of colours. You’ll find lots of fun, peppy colours dominating her wardrobe like red, blue, green, aqua, yellow, mint and pastels. On the other hand, it is very unlikely to see her wearing neutral and muted shades. However, we’ve seen her donning the monochromatic look quite flawlessly at time. Try investing in bright coloured pieces. They help keep up that bubbly personality of Jess.

*Stripes and Polka Dots: It’s a complete no-brainer that Jess loves stripes and polka dots. Infact we all know by now that they add a touch of femininity to your outfit. I think I have lost count of the amazing striped and polka-dotted dresses, blouses and skirts Jess has worn till now. Include some printed and patterned pieces in your closet to jazz it up.

*You can hardly see Jess wearing heels. So take a mental note, flats are comfy yet comes in amazing colours and styles. Moreover flats go with any kind of clothing- dresses, skirts, shorts, pants. Jess pretty much wears flats in every colour irrespective of her outfit.Flats: Obviously Jess’ closet isn’t complete without her cute ballet flats in bright colours.

*Shrugs and Sweaters: Another important element of Jess’ style is layering. Whether it’s a dress or a skirt, you’ll always see her wearing shrugs to accentuate her clothes. Think shrugs in bright colours like blue, red, green, yellow and even neutrals like black, white and grey. Shrugs not only make you look better, they make you look chic.

*Belts + Nerdy Glasses: Jess may be not be the typical accessories girl. But one thing her clothes never misses is a belt and/or nerdy glasses. Moreover, aren’t belts supposed to add that extra zing to your outfit? It doesn’t matter what colour it is, as long you have one. Preferably colours like brown, white, black and tan suits everything. You can opt for a pop shade too to go that extra bit. And as far as nerdy glasses are considered, they couldn’t be any better. You can stop envying the geeky ladies now. Just go buy yourself a faux glass already!

*Shorter hemline, Flirty hemline: Most of Jess’ clothes end a few inches above her knees, which ultimately makes her look a whole lot sexier. Jess’ wardrobe is all about flirty dresses and short skirts of stunning varieties. But if you’re uncomfortable showing off your legs, Jess has a solution to that too. Read ahead. . .

Leggings and Stockings: Yep you got it.. Jess might wear lots of fun, short pieces. But what makes her closet so unique is her ability to layer them. Pretty much all of her clothes can be worn over tights and stockings. Infact, we’ve seen Jess pair more than some gorgeous pieces with stockings and leggings. So don’t fret if you’re not up for some leggy-ness. Show off your perfect dress with a stocking!
Retro-inspired: I probably should have listed it at the top of the post. But then I realized, it doesn’t bother much. If you observe Jess’ clothes closely, you’ll notice that most of them are retro-inspired. Bows, polka-dots, hairbands – they’re all very retro. So if you truly want that cherry on the top, try shopping at your local thrift stores or vintage boutiques. Pick up something that has a retro-ish touch to it and amalgamate it with some modern items. Say, you picked up a pair of vintage jeans. Try pairing it with a ruffled top or something trendy. Because Jess likes to. . .

*Mix-and-Match: Print on print anyone? Perhaps colourblocking? Jess likes to mix and match her clothes. Say it be a polka-dotted shirt with graphic printed skirt or printed dress with a  solid-coloured sweater. Styling becomes a whole lot of fun when you get the freedom to mix-and-match your clothes to create something new. Personally I’m a huge fan of it!

*Love what you’re wearing: Last but not the least, love yourself. Don’t force yourself to wear something just because everyone is [once again, I don't mean breaking dress codes!]. This might not be a fashion tip, but it what makes Jess stand out. She HATES suits and clothes that don’t involves bright colours and bows. She hates anything that makes someone look serious and uptight. So love what you do and everything will instantly fall in place!
